Swimmers are being warned not to enter the water on Exmouth Beach due to a pollution incident.

The Environment Agency says it is 'advising against' people bathing in the sea due to the spill which was identified at about 11am on 15 August.

A sign has been erected on the beach and a red flag is now flying to discourage people from swimming.

In a statement, the Environment Agency said high levels of ammonia were detected in a brook which is connected to the bathing spot.

“Precautionary advice against bathing at Exmouth has been given as we have detected elevated readings of ammonia in a brook which connects to this popular bathing water", the statement read.
