For 50 years, Revels North has brought traditional singing, dancing and performance to the Upper Valley, with events throughout the year and a Christmas show that featured heavily in arts lovers’ holiday to-do lists.
But now, following a historic defunding of the Granite State arts scene in the state budget earlier this summer, it’s curtains for Revels North, one of many organizations that see lean times ahead.
“We just couldn’t keep trying to fill the void,” said Julia Hautaniemi, the organization’s executive director, noting that inconsistent years following the COVID-19 pandemic also played a role. “It wasn’t the only factor in our decision. It was probably the final factor. If we knew we could rely on that money, we may have tried to continue.”
