PORTLAND, Ore. — For the first time, a scientific study has examined Oregon's pioneering model for psilocybin therapy, reflecting on a program now two years underway.

Psilocybin is the psychedelic compound that occurs naturally in some mushrooms. Oregon became the first state in the nation to set up a legalized framework for psilocybin following the passage of Measure 109 back in 2020.

Past research suggests that psilocybin can help people address stubborn mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, trauma and addiction.

The federal Food & Drug Administration has even designated psilocybin as a "breakthrough therapy," despite the substance still being a Schedule I substance at the federal level — putting it on-par with heroin, mescaline, MDMA, LSD and "bath salts." Marij
