CAREY, Ohio — A creek in Carey turned bright red this week after a spill of liquid pig manure, raising concerns from residents and water experts about the potential impact on the environment.
“It’s like red, red blood running through there. I’ve never seen anything like it before,” said resident Tim Vaughn on Tuesday to WTOL 11.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency confirmed to WTOL 11 that the source of the spill in Poverty Run Creek was liquid pig manure fertilizer from a lagoon at Wyandot Pork’s farm. The creek flows into Tymochtee Creek and then the Sandusky River.
Sandy Bihn, Lake Erie Waterkeeper and a water quality advocate for nearly 20 years, said the situation is part of a broader problem.
