NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) - Stephen. F Austin State University moved forward with an appeal after they were ordered to bring back three women’s sports programs.
In May, the university cut bowling and volleyball, both all-female sports. The cuts also included the women’s and men’s golf teams. The school said it was because of budget deficits and the anticipated financial impact of revenue sharing requirements with Division 1 athletes.
In July, six female athletes sued the university, saying the cuts were a violation of federal Title IX protections. On Aug. 1, a federal judge in Lufkin ruled SFA had to reinstate those programs. SFA is now appealing that ruling, citing issues with finding coaches for the programs as well as the cost to get those programs up and running again.
