Democrats released a proposed mid-decade redistricting map for California on Friday designed to counter a gerrymander plan by Governor Greg Abbott of Texas. The proposed map, drawn up by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), would add 5 Democratic seats to Congress from California to counter the 5 lost seats in Texas proposed by Abbott to expand the GOP House majority in the 2026 midterms.

The move comes as California Governor Gavin Newsom pushes a special election for November that would suspend the state's independent redistricting commission until the end of the decade to allow for mid-cycle shifts in congressional district maps. Maps are traditionally redrawn every ten years by the commission to reflect the results of the census.
