While most people unplug space heaters or curling irons when not in use, there are other appliances that also deserve attention — especially if you're heading out on vacation. Advertisement

"Kitchen appliances like coffee makers, microwaves, and toaster ovens draw small amounts of electricity when not in use," says Ben Kolo, owner of Mr. Electric of Central Iowa. "The phantom load is minimal but can add up over time."

Over the course of a year, it can add up to $3 to $8 per device, according to Ryan Gregor, owner and head electrician at RCG Electrical.
