OMAHA, Neb. —

In 2013, 19-year-old Melissa Rodriguez was murdered by her ex-boyfriend .

Now, twelve years after her death, Melissa's family is remembering her in a special way.

Her sister Mikaela Harper-Rodriguez started the Melissa K. Rodriguez Foundation to honor Melissa's legacy.

Harper-Rodriguez says her goal is to create a safe environment for women and children to build good habits by providing classes that teach things like emotional wellness, financial literacy and safe relationships.

Family knows daughter is looking down on them

One of the first events the foundation is hosting is a memorial walk at Hitchcock Park as a tribute to Melissa and to any loved ones that walkers would like to honor.
