Civil Rights leader Calvin Woods Sr. died Friday night at age 91 at his home in Birmingham.

He had been in ill health under medical care for the past month and was living with his son, Chris Woods.

"We are rejoicing that he is back home with the Lord and not suffering any more. We are happy for him," Chris Woods said. "The Lord blessed us that he was our father."

His son said the family is gathering together to celebrate his life.

Born a Black man in Birmingham in the 1930s, Woods didn't have many opportunities. Instead, he created his own through his education. At the age of 12 he attended a segregated A.H. Parker High School where his love of learning flourished.
