FAIRFIELD, Ala. —
A retired Jefferson County judge is taking a new role helping educate the next generation of legal professionals.
DEAN CAROLE C. SMITHERMAN
Carole Smitherman, the first Black woman to serve as mayor of Birmingham, has been named dean of Miles Law School, where she is an alumna.
The appointment comes months after Smitherman retired from the bench, capping decades of public service.
The law school’s chairman, John Hudson, said Smitherman is the best person for the job.
“Her accomplishments … [have] given her the ability to lead with empathy as she offers mentorship to the next generation,” Hudson said.
