SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - Erin became the first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic season on Friday and rapidly strengthened to a Category 5 Saturday morning, according to the National Hurricane Center. It is not a threat to the Gulf Coast.

The storm is currently 105 miles north of Anguilla with maximum sustained winds of 160 mph. It is moving west at 17 mph.

No direct impacts to the US are expected but the East Coast should watch for high surf and high rip current risk.

As of Saturday morning, there are no tropical threats to the Gulf Coast. However, hurricane season is far from over. We will keep you posted over the next few weeks as we enter into the peak of hurricane season.
