SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance is mourning the loss of one of its most iconic animal residents. Kalluk, a male polar bear who captured the hearts of guests and staff alike, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Aug. 14, at the age of 24, zoo officials announced Friday.
According to a statement shared by the zoo, Kalluk was surrounded by his dedicated Wildlife Care team during his final moments. He had recently begun showing signs of age-related illness, prompting a thorough wellness evaluation. After considering all options, experts made the compassionate decision to say goodbye.
