Mayor LaToya Cantrell is now the second New Orleans mayor to face criminal charges, after a federal indictment landed Friday , and the first to do so while in office.
A grand jury returned an indictment that centers on an affair with her bodyguard, Jeffrey Vappie, and includes misuse of taxpayer money, lying to cover it up and deleting evidence.
Cantrell was scheduled to speak at Saturday morning's kickoff of the new Amtrak line to Mobile, but she did not attend.
Both Cantrell and Vappie face 18 felony counts in a wide-ranging investigation conducted over several years that includes a handful of others in her orbit.
Here are the highlights of what has happened so far.
