A federal grand jury has returned an indictment of New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell, culminating a years-long criminal inquiry that added to a series of scandals during Cantrell's second term .
The charges were not immediately available Friday after a grand jury foreperson returned the indictment to a magistrate judge. But they follow indictments last year of Cantrell associates on federal bribery, wire fraud, false statements and other charges.
Cantrell's former New Orleans Police Department bodyguard, Jeffrey Vappie, who was accused last summer of false statements and wire fraud counts, also faces fresh charges under the new indictment.
Here's a timeline of the federal government's investigation of the New Orleans mayor.
