WARREN — Oakwood Cemetery has completed the restoration of 13 graves vandalized in May, just days before Memorial Day, bringing relief and closure to families.

“It’s liberating. It’s finally done,” said Oakwood Cemetery Superintendent Michelle Scott on Friday as the final headstones were reinstalled.

The vandalism, discovered May 25 by a visitor, involved the toppling of a memorial bench and 12 or 13 headstones, some marking veterans’ graves.

The destruction, which included damaged flags and markers, was estimated to cost $4,500 to repair, with each headstone repair priced at approximately $305, according to Warren Marble & Granite.
