A 57-year-old man is in critical condition after he fell into the street and was struck by a transit bus Friday afternoon in Waikiki.

Honolulu police said the crash occurred at about 4 p.m. at the intersection of Kuhio and Royal Hawaiian avenues. The man was walking east on a Kuhio Avenue sidewalk when he tripped and fell into the roadway, where he was then struck by a bus.

Paramedics took the man to a hospital in serious condition, but his condition worsened and was downgraded to critical, according to police.

The transit bus driver, a 56-year-old man, remained at the scene.

Police are still investigating the collision, but said speed, drugs, or alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors.
