Owosso, Mich. (WILX) - For more than a decade, the building that is now the Shiawassee County Animal Control and Care Shelter, sat vacant. In 2012, the animal shelter that was located there closed down after it could not afford to keep it’s doors open.

“When I took over as Sheriff, one of my goals was to help the public was get an animal shelter back in place,” Shiawassee County Sheriff Doug Chapman said. “So, a group of us got together and started reaching out. I went live in the beginning asking for donations and help from the public. Every single penny that we have received will go back to the animal shelter.”

80% of what was needed, from funding, to material, labor and equipment was donated from members and businesses around the community.
