LEXINGTON, S.C. (WIS) - Saturday marked 31 years since an F-3 tornado tore through Lexington, causing $50 million of damage and leaving 40 people hurt.
Fueled by the remnants of Tropical Storm Beryl in 1994, it was one of five tornadoes that touched down in the county that day and part of a larger outbreak across South Carolina.
Kirk Morgan, a Lexington lawyer, remembers it like it was yesterday.
“One of my young partners said there was a bad storm,” he said. “Get in the closet. [I] didn’t know what he was talking about.”
Within minutes, the tornado struck.
Kirk’s son, Sam, was three years old at the time and home with a babysitter. The two took cover in a closet and were not hurt as the storm tore apart the home.
