Tristan Rogers , best known for his longtime role as Robert Scorpio on "General Hospital," has died. He was 79.

Rogers' manager, Meryl Soodak, confirmed the soap star's "unfortunate passing" to USA TODAY on Aug. 15. Soodak also told Los Angeles' ABC7 that Rogers was battling lung cancer at the time of his death. Playing Scorpio "meant everything to him," Soodak told ABC7.

The late actor lived in Palm Springs and has a star on the Palm Springs Walk of the Stars. One of his recent projects was P.S. After Dark , a talk show in which he interviewed guests in the city. He was a longtime volunteer with the local American Cancer Society, which included lip syncing to help raise money for the organization at its annual Lip Sync for a Cure show .
