A man was charged with felony possession of a firearm on school property at West Side High School in Gary.
De'Andre Hicks, 21, said he brought a gun to the school to defend his sister after an altercation with a student.
School security officers stopped Hicks as he attempted to flee in a car and confiscated the gun.
The quick response by Gary Community School Corporation security officers prevented potential violence, according to Chelsea Whittington, chief of public and community relations for the Gary Community School Corporation.
Hicks was arrested Thursday, posted a $1,500 cash bond and is awaiting a formal court appearance.
