We moved not long ago from the suburbs of Wisconsin to the woods of rural Minnesota.
One of the most striking differences is how brightly the stars shine in the night sky. They stand out like diamonds against the black canopy of darkness.
This is the image the Apostle Paul uses to describe how we as followers of Christ are to stand out in a dark and depraved world. He says that we are to become “children of God without fault in a crooked and warped generation,” that we may “shine among them like stars in the sky.” (Phil. 2:15)
Paul was writing these words to Christians living in the city of Philippi, which was a Roman colony steeped in the darkness of emperor worship. They were a morally bankrupt people who had no knowledge of the living God.
