RICHMOND, Va. — Gov. Glenn Youngkin said President Donald Trump has not asked him to send Virginia National Guard troops into Washington, D.C., despite the president’s recent push for more federal and state involvement in the capital’s public safety efforts.
Speaking to reporters this week, Youngkin emphasized that Virginia’s Guard will continue to play a supporting role through the state’s Homeland Security Task Force, rather than direct street patrols.
“He has not [asked],” Youngkin said when pressed on whether Trump had requested Virginia Guard forces for D.C. “But as you know, we are working already in collaboration with the federal government on our Virginia Homeland Security Task Force, and the Guard will have a deployment in that cooperation.”
