WOODSTOCK -- One of the biggest rivalries in Georgia high school football, between two campuses separated by a few miles, came down to overtime.
In the end, host Etowah defeated Woodstock 38-31 after one overtime Friday in the season opener for both teams.
With the game tied at 31-all, Etowah (1-0) faced a fourth down in the opening overtime possession. Walker Hughes scored on a 2-yard run to give the Eagles the lead following the extra point.
Woodstock (0-1) took its turn and also faced a fourth down. Quarterback Graham Burmeister came under heavy pressure and his desperation heave was intercepted by Etowah’s Reggie Bruell.
That ended the game, and Etowah snapped a two-game losing streak in the rivalry, extending its overall lead in the Towne Lake rivalry to 14-12.
