Maumee’s multi-year campaign to “calm” traffic on Conant Street through its downtown — and in so doing perhaps discourage commercial trucks from following U.S. 20 there — made me wonder why a U.S. 20 Truck Route is signed around neighboring Perrysburg but not Maumee.
What I learned is that nobody at the Ohio Department of Transportation truly knows how the Truck U.S. 20, which uses I-75, I-475, and State Rt. 25 to bypass downtown Perrysburg, even came to be.
If a city street is part of a state highway, the city has to get ODOT’s approval to put a weight restriction on that street, and a weight restriction is the only statutory means to restrict truck traffic in Ohio.
