A report from the National Weather Service was issued on Sunday at 5:34 p.m. for strong thunderstorms until 6 p.m. for Staten Island.
Wind gusts of up to 40 mph and pea-sized hail (0.25 inches) are foreseen.
"At 5:34 p.m., Doppler radar tracked a strong thunderstorm over Orange, moving southeast at 25 mph," according to the weather service. "Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to outdoor objects is possible."
Locations impacted by the alert include Newark, Jersey City, Elizabeth, Bayonne, Hoboken, Bloomfield, Linden, Orange, Summit, Millburn, Secaucus, Harrison, Todt Hill, Caldwell and Port Richmond.
The weather service states, "If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building."
