NEWAYGO COUNTY, Mich. — Starting Monday, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's sea lamprey control team will begin putting lampricides in the Muskegon River.

It's part of an effort to reduce the number of "vampires of the Great Lakes."

Sea lampreys are invasive parasitic creatures that latch onto fish with their circular mouths and sharp teeth. Over time, sea lampreys leech nutrients from their host.

The Great Lakes Fisher Commission said a single sea lamprey can kill up to 40 pounds of fish over their 12-18 month feeding period.

These unwelcome parasites have wreaked havoc on the Great Lakes and negatively impacted fisheries in both the US and Canada.
