Authorities in Sydney are investigating a shooting that left one man dead and another seriously injured in the inner city. The incident occurred on Sunday night at The Harold hotel on Ross Street in Forest Lodge. Police received reports of the shooting and arrived at the scene shortly after.
Witnesses say the victims were approaching their car when they were ambushed by gunfire. One bullet narrowly missed a female staff member, striking the pub's window instead. Paramedics treated both men at the scene, but a 39-year-old man succumbed to his injuries. The second victim, a 31-year-old man with alleged ties to organized crime, was hospitalized in serious condition after suffering gunshot wounds. He received assistance from nearby medical students and a local doctor who were present at the time.
Police believe the shooting was targeted and are actively searching for suspects. They are looking for a dark-colored vehicle that may have been involved in the incident. Authorities have urged the public to come forward with any dash cam footage or information related to the shooting.
On Monday morning, large sections of Wigram Road and Ross Street remained cordoned off with police tape, causing significant traffic disruptions in Glebe, Forest Lodge, and Annandale. Buses on routes 433 and 469 were rerouted to avoid the area. Crime scene investigators marked locations where bullet casings were found scattered across the footpaths near The Harold.
A local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, reported hearing 12 to 15 gunshots. "At first I thought it might be fireworks, but then there was a second burst, and it was clear then they were gunshots," she said.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns condemned the shooting, calling it a violent act in a suburban pub. "It's deplorable, it's disgusting, it's the kind of thing that you don't expect to see in a reasonably safe city like Sydney," he stated. While he could not guarantee an end to the violence, he assured the public of a thorough police response.
