This Sunday, Trujillo-born cyclist Julio César León, a pioneer of Venezuelan Olympic cycling and the first Venezuelan-born athlete to compete in the Olympic Games, died at the age of 100. He competed in the 1948 London Games.

His death was confirmed by the Sports Glories Foundation of Venezuela, which paid tribute to this legend of Venezuelan sport. León was born on February 2, 1925, and left an indelible mark on Venezuelan cycling after his historic participation in this ecumenical sporting event.

After retiring from professional sports, he dedicated himself to promoting cycling among young people in Venezuela. In 2020, the Venezuelan government awarded him the Order of Sporting Merit in recognition of his contribution to national sport.
