WASHINGTON — On Sunday, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) posted a video on its official X account showing ICE agents tearing down a sign at Lamont Park in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood on Friday.

The sign included a message written in Spanish that disparaged the federal agency, and a message written in English that says, "Mount Pleasant melts ICE.”

Neighbors spoke about ICE’s actions on Friday, with some saying it flies in the face of the neighborhood’s history.

"It's a largely central American historical neighborhood that's been gentrified a lot but retains that essence," says Gus May, who owns a business in the area.

The event underscores the tension many D.C. residents are feeling as federal authorities and National Guard soldiers patrol the District.
