WASHINGTON — On Sunday, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) posted a video on its official X account showing ICE agents tearing down a sign at Lamont Park in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood on Friday.
The sign included a message written in Spanish that disparaged the federal agency, and a message written in English that says, "Mount Pleasant melts ICE.”
Neighbors spoke about ICE’s actions on Friday, with some saying it flies in the face of the neighborhood’s history.
"It's a largely central American historical neighborhood that's been gentrified a lot but retains that essence," says Gus May, who owns a business in the area.
The event underscores the tension many D.C. residents are feeling as federal authorities and National Guard soldiers patrol the District.
