Sean McDermott thought his team was trending upward coming off a solid joint practice with the Chicago Bears .
It didn’t translate to the preseason game .
The Buffalo Bills head coach called his team’s 38–0 blowout loss to Chicago “not even close,” citing poor execution at the line of scrimmage, too many penalties, and a failure to compete, both against the Bears’ starters early and their backups later.
"Fundamentally, we weren't good enough," said McDermott, who was hoping younger players would step up while starters rested.
