PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — It’s a solemn anniversary today in Pawtucket, as residents and city leaders will recognize the centennial of the Mackinac Tragedy.
On August 18, 1925, the “Mackinac” steamboat left Newport for Pawtucket, with hundreds on board who were coming back from a holiday sponsored by their employer, J and P Coats Company.
However, the ship’s boiler exploded, killing 55 people, and injuring around 150.
To honor the tragedy, there will be a gathering at Festival Pier this morning.
That ceremony is set for 11:30.
