Faithful followers of Jesus do not listen to his teachings, examine his actions and debate mercy and empathy. They celebrate it. They bask in it! They know that if it were not for empathy, there would be no incarnation, and without mercy, there would be no salvation.

Faithful followers of Jesus, therefore, understand that the work of God’s mercy is to make us more merciful toward others. And we know that the empathetic God in the works of Jesus shows us what mercy looks like practically in a commitment to loving neighbors and enemies.

So, those who faithfully follow Jesus do not debate mercy and empathy. We do not ask, “How much mercy is too much?” We ask, “How can we plead for mercy on behalf of others?” because that is what Christ did for us when he said, “Father, forgive them, for the
