Hurricane Erin , a powerful Category 4 storm with sustained winds of 130 mph, is expected to remain offshore—but its effects could still reach eastern Long Island and other parts of the New York coastline this week.

Though the storm's center will likely stay over the Atlantic, dangerous surf and large ocean swells are forecast to impact New York’s beaches. According to AccuWeather , waves may reach 10 to 15 feet along ocean-facing beaches, increasing the risk of rip currents, beach erosion, and minor coastal flooding.

Swimmers and boaters are urged to use extreme caution. Rip currents may be strong and frequent, even on sunny days. Offshore, wave heights will be even greater, creating hazardous conditions for commercial vessels and cruise ships.
