ATLANTA — Lawmakers in Atlanta and Fulton County this week will consider two separate measures with significant implications for the future of jailing and detention in the city.
First, the Atlanta City Council on Monday will consider a resolution to begin phasing Fulton County out of the Atlanta City Detention Center.
The city and county entered an agreement in late 2022 for the Fulton Sheriff's Office to temporarily hold inmates at the city jail, which leaders have been planning to discontinue use of for years . As part of that agreement, at the time three years ago Mayor Andre Dickens announced a $3 million plan to partially convert the detention center into a diversion center.
The agreement was meant to last four years, at the time it was announced.
