(NewsNation) — Hurricane Erin again strengthened to a Category 4 storm overnight, prompting evacuations Monday as the National Hurricane Center warns of expected "life-threatening surf and rip currents" along parts of the East Coast.

Mandatory evacuations were issued for North Carolina's Ocracoke and Hatteras Islands, which had been under a State of Emergency since Sunday evening.

The Bahamas government issued a Tropical Storm Watch for the central Bahamas, while a Tropical Storm Warning remained in effect for the Turks and Caicos Islands and southeast Bahamas, the hurricane center reported.
