A Nottinghamshire police officer who launched an "unprovoked drunken assault" on a man said his actions were due to his mental health issues. The police constable, who has since resigned, threw two punches at a member of the public while off duty on a night out in Mansfield on October 22, 2023.

A gross misconduct hearing, held on Monday, August 18, found the officer, whose identity has been protected, would have been dismissed by the force. Despite attempts to have his anonymity lifted by Nottinghamshire Live , hearing chair Leicestershire Police chief constable David Sandall decided it should remain in place due to his “serious mental health issues resulting from prior military service”.
