There’s something Shakespearean about pro wrestling.
In Shakespeare’s time, the area that circled the stage at the Globe Theatre was populated by the “groundlings,” the poor farmers and workers who got in for just a penny each. While the rich watched from the balconies, the unwashed masses stood in the pit, watching the comedies and tragedies unfold.

Shakespeare wrote for the masses. While the language is obtuse to many of us here in the 21st century, he was pure pop culture in his time.
Tonight, we are not at the Globe Theatre. We are at Midway, a concert venue in Edmonton’s south side that, for the evening, has been transformed into a wrestling arena. The crowd surrounds the stage, some sitting, some standing.
