Cam Newton only spent one season at Auburn, but it proved to be one of the most special we've seen in the history of college football as he won the Heisman Trophy, led the Tigers to their first national championship in more than 50 years and became the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft.
Now, the Tigers are honoring the college football legend by retiring his No. 2 jersey.
AU announced the decision to retire Newton's jersey on Monday, and the ceremony will take place during the Tigers' home game against Georgia at Jordan-Hare Stadium on Oct. 11. Newton will become the fourth Auburn player to have his jersey retired, joining Pat Sullivan, Bo Jackson and Terry Beasley.
“Auburn will always be home to me,” Newton said in a release. “The national championship we won in 2010 was a special moment, and to have my jersey retired alongside legends like Pat Sullivan, Bo Jackson and Terry Beasley is an incredible honor that I'll cherish forever. War Eagle!”
“Cam Newton not only led Auburn to a national championship in 2010, but he produced one of the most prolific seasons ever by a college football player,” athletics director John Cohen said. “Retiring Cam’s jersey number is a fitting way to celebrate his lasting impact on Auburn University and Auburn Athletics for all time.”
Newton threw for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns during his lone season at Auburn in 2010, and he added 1,473 yards and 20 touchdowns on the ground. For his efforts, he was a consensus All-American and won the Walter Camp Award, Maxwell Award, Manning Award and Davey O’Brien Award.
He was also named the Associated Press National Player of the Year.
Newton was the first overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft by the Carolina Panthers, with whom he played from 2011-19. He earned three Pro Bowl honors and was named the NFL Most Valuable Player in 2015, when he led the Panthers to a Super Bowl appearance.
He spent the 2020 season in New England, replacing Tom Brady, and last played in the NFL in 2021 as he returned to the Panthers.
Now, after one of the best single-season performances in the history of college football, his jersey is being immortalized at Auburn.
