In their latest lawsuit against the Trump administration, a coalition of 21 attorneys general sued the Justice Department and Attorney General Pam Bondi Monday, alleging they are unlawfully withholding $1 billion in grants for victims of crimes. The attorneys general, all Democrats, argue the federal government is illegally tying immigration enforcement requirements to the funds.

“The Victims of Crime Act funds have been in place and untouched, supported by presidents and members of Congress of both parties for over four decades,” New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin said during a news conference announcing the lawsuit.

The Victims of Crime Act was signed into law by Republican President Ronald Reagan in 1984 to provide financial assistance to states and local compensation program
