A human case of the West Nile virus was detected in Oakland County, health officials announced Monday.

A county resident, who did not report recent travels, confirmed to have the first Oakland case of the mosquito-borne virus so far in 2025 and the second in the state this year .

Macomb County last month reported the virus was detected in mosquitoes there.

“This is an important reminder that West Nile Virus is present in our community,” said Kate Guzman, health officer for Oakland County Health Division, in a release. “We strongly encourage residents to protect themselves from mosquitoes until the first hard frost of the year.”

Oakland County officials did not release identifying information of the resident for health privacy reasons.
