NORFOLK, Va. — Students, teachers, and administrators in Norfolk and Portsmouth returned to the classroom Monday, marking the official start of a new school year. With the first day in the books, city officials are urging both drivers and pedestrians to stay alert, especially in and around school zones.
In Norfolk, officials say the increased foot and vehicle traffic presents a critical need for safety awareness.
“Everyone mixed together means there’s a need for reinforcing that safety as a priority,” Norfolk City Planner II Ashley Blue told 13News Now.
Blue emphasized that safety is a two-way street, and it's not just for drivers. Pedestrians and bicyclists also play a vital role.
