A 57-year-old man was taken to a hospital with serious injuries after he was found in the water Saturday afternoon off the coast of Nahant, Massachusetts.

Police and fire crews responded to Nahant Short Beach around 3:22 p.m. for reports of an individual in distress in the water.

The Nahant man had been riding what appeared to a surfboard-like water toy before he was found in the water and brought to shore by a passerby, police said, citing a preliminary investigation.

An off-duty Cambridge firefighter and off-duty nurse began life-saving aid before first responders arrived on scene and took over the medical care, police added.

The man was transported to the hospital. There was no immediate update on his conditio
