A fifth person has died in connection with an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in Harlem, the city’s Department of Health confirmed Monday.
Since the outbreak in Central Harlem — which includes ZIP codes 10027, 10030, 10035, 10037 and 10039 — was identified on July 25, 108 people have been diagnosed with the disease, the department said.
As of Monday, 14 of those people were hospitalized, according to the department.
Legionnaires’ disease is a type of pneumonia that is caused by Legionella bacteria, which grow in warm water and spread through building water systems. The city's outbreak has been linked to cooling towers, which use water and a fan to cool buildings.
