An Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (OTA) worker was killed and another is in the hospital after a semi veered off the roadway and hit them, authorities say.

Lt. Mark Southall with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol confirmed the fatal crash involved the OTA workers. He said they were parked on the shoulder near Exit 313 in Miami, with one worker picking up trash on the side of the highway and the other still in the work truck, when the truck went off-road and struck them.

Lt. Southall said the worker in the grass was hit and killed, and the other worker is injured at a Joplin hospital. His condition is unknown. Based on statements from the truck driver, OHP said, "It does appear there was some inattention on their part." That driver is still being questioned.
