WACO, Texas (KWTX) - A Central Texas softball star now fighting stage four Melanoma which has left her paralyzed is getting a helping hand from a former Waco firefighter paralyzed in an off-duty accident in 2017.

Retired Waco firefighter Garth Goodwin, 54, of Moody, is spearheading a fundraiser Sunday for Emily Bounds, 27, also of Moody, called “Extra Innings for Emily.”

Emily was diagnosed with Melanoma in 2023.

She calls Garth one of her “best friends” and it’s a feeling shared by the retired Waco firefighter who has known of Emily her entire life, but didn’t really know her until after her diagnosis.

Garth and Emily’s dad are lifelong friends and Garth let Emily borrow his wheelchair van in hopes it would give her back some independence.
