WACO, Texas (KWTX) - House Bill 9 would raise the exemption on business personal property tax, potentially exempting small businesses from the tax.

Business personal property is any tangible property used for the business. For Luna Clean Food Cafe owner Laís Lowen, it’s her equipment, tables and chairs.

“That’s a part of the appraisal,” Lowen said. “When we bought the tables and chairs we paid taxes on them. So having to pay every year adds up.”

Businesses have to pay taxes on their personal property if it exceeds $2,500 worth of appraised value.

“Everything that we bought in there, we either made it or paid for in full,” Lowen said. “So for us to have to pay taxes on things we already own can be a bit disheartening.”
