BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Sen. Bill Cassidy’s 2021 vote to convict former President Donald Trump for his role in the Capitol riots has become the focal point of an aggressive campaign by MAGA Republicans, led by state Sen. Blake Miguez, who is now challenging Cassidy for his U.S. Senate seat.

“I’m Blake Miguez and I’m running for the U.S. Senate because Bill Cassidy sucks,” Miguez said in his campaign announcement on June 17.

With just eight months until the April primaries, the race is heating up. Louisiana pollster Bernie Pinsonat, a veteran analyst in the Capitol area, believes Miguez is banking on the hard-right Republican base that remains loyal to Trump and critical of Cassidy.
