GAYLORD — As Michigan’s 2025 construction season winds down, state transportation officials are warning that more than 100 trunkline bridges could close to traffic by 2035 without new funding, a move that could affect 1.8 million drivers daily.

Per an Aug. 19 news release, the Michigan Department of Transportation highlighted the issue in a video release focused on the M-65 bridge over the Thunder Bay River in Alpena County , built in 1953 and rated in poor condition during a July inspection.

Concerns include deterioration of the bridge deck and the risk of its foundation being undermined during heavy rain and flooding.
