COOS COUNTY, Ore. (KPTV) - A large and historic tree in Coos County is on fire and has been actively burning since Saturday.
Coos Forest Patrol says the historic Doerner Fir tree is burning, with fire at the top of the tree and working its way down the trunk.
The tree is located on Bureau of Land Management land east of Coquille.
Formerly known as the Brummit Fir, the tree stands over 325-feet tall and has a diameter of over 11-feet. It is one of the tallest non-Redwood trees in the world. Experts believe it is 450 to 500 years old.
Helicopters have been dropping buckets of water on the tree and crews have sprinklers placed at the base of the tree. Firefighters can’t work directly beneath the tree because of the risk of fallout.
