New Mexico State Police investigators still have no answers in a shooting earlier this month in Madrid that left an Albuquerque man dead along N.M. 14.

While state police have not released any reports on the slaying and have not made an arrest or filed any charges against a suspect, audio recordings of 911 calls released Monday provide some details about the events that unfolded after shots were fired.

The emergency calls indicate 48-year-old Patrick Wheeler and his girlfriend were sitting in their pickup on the side of N.M. 14 south of Madrid on Aug. 9, after having dinner at a restaurant in the village, when another man pulled up on a dirt bike, fatally shot Wheeler and then took off down the road.

Wheeler’s girlfriend told 911 dispatchers her boyfriend was killed “for no reason.”
